A ride to remember: My Nordsjorittet memories

Sending good vibes and wishes to those who participated in the Nordsjørittet today.

Nordsjørittet (North Sea Race) is a Norway's popular and scenic annual bike race, stretching distances of 92kms (full race) and 45kms (mini race).

As many cyclists took part in the race today, I found myself looking back at one of the memorable experiences of life.

Throwback to many years ago, when I participated in the race in different years trying both the distances. While I enjoyed both the experiences, it is the first ride of 92kms that has stayed with me all these years.

I was always fascinated by the active lifestyle in Norway, where hiking, skiing, cycling, running were just not workout routines but a way of life. Meanwhile, there i was, whose workout routine meant a good yoga session and a fun zumba class.

One year I was cheering for my friends for the race, and the next year, I decided to try it out myself.

With less than 2 months of training and on a bike that I used for fun and casual strolling to gym and work, I prepared for the race.

The race day excitement was contagious and the loud music made it feel like a fun race.

And the first thing I felt? A lot of cheering and a happy breeze on my face. And then? PERIOD. Oh no.

For someone who has painful cramps and a body that usually demands complete rest on the first day, I had no idea how I would do it.

I kept pedaling.. through muddy trails and gravel roads, while also watching medical teams assisting injured riders along the way. It was both frightening and motivating.

About halfway through, my back turned so stiff, (read it as), hard as wood, but my legs kept moving. I had to stop my bike, lay down on the grass on the side of a random road, and just feel my body.

I pushed on through lots of gravel, paths and roads that no longer felt paved, but steep hills.

Surprisingly, the last 20kms turned to be a joy ride - I was happily eager to reach the destination.

FINALLY! crossing the finish line, people applauding the riders, volunteers placing medals for the finishers, while many participants had already started the after-party, I remember myself laughing, exhausted but incredibly proud.

92kms. The distance itself was not a challenge, but how your body reacts and the training makes a lot of difference.

That day I had not one, but 3 goals:

  1. FINISH the race, no matter what
  2. DO NOT, I kept repeating to myself, Do not get injured
  3. Just SMILE and enjoy the whole experience, including the pain

That trip turned out to be so special and memorable, I am still glad I did it.

Years later, I completed the 43 kms mini race as well. Strangely, I remember very little about it. Trying something for the first time, without an ounce of experience , is always special.💗
